I was born in LeMars, Iowa, the fifth 2 CONC of six children. Dad was one of two sons of an only son of an only son 2 CONC in a military family. My great, great grandfather was a general in the 2 CONC Civil War, and my dad landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day in WWII. Mom was 2 CONC one of nine children. 2 CONT 2 CONT My father died when I was 6 years old. We were in the process of moving 2 CONC from Iowa to Rhode Island - dad, who was an electrical engineer, had 2 CONC accepted a new job and was already east when he entered the hospital. 2 CONC The home in Iowa was sold before it became apparent that he would not 2 CONC recover, and so my mother - with six children ranging in age from 1 to 16 2 CONC - had no where to go except home to Northeast PA where she grew up. We 2 CONC settled in Montrose, a small community north of Scranton. 2 CONT 2 CONT I spent two years in elementary school there before my mother felt she 2 CONC needed to send me away to school. I think she believed that I would not 2 CONC get a good enough education in rural Montrose, and she heard about a 2 CONC boarding school in Philadelphia for fatherless boys called Girard 2 CONC College, so I began my third grade at Girard. I'll never forget when she 2 CONC left me there, that my mother bravely said good-bye, with no outward sign 2 CONC of emotion, "Do what's right. Work hard. Keep your chin up even when 2 CONC you feel like you can't go on." 2 CONT 2 CONT I cried myself to sleep for months. I was a smart, eager to please boy 2 CONC and did well in the early years at Girard. We had vesper and chapel 2 CONC services three times a week, with a Sunday service as well, all done 2 CONC non-denominationally. Some of my earliest church memories are of singing 2 CONC Fairest Lord Jesus in the big chapel there with the gold embossed 2 CONC ceiling, and listening to the school headmaster use scripture to admonish 2 CONC us to be good. 2 CONT 2 CONT More importantly, though, on the positive side was the message from the 2 CONC founder etched in the stone wall in the back of the chapel. Stephen 2 CONC Girard had said this, "My deeds must be my life. When I am gone, they 2 CONC will speak for me." I saw this every week for eight years of my life, 2 CONC and I must admit, it has left an indelible impression upon me. 2 CONT 2 CONT On the negative side in my spiritual journey, I remember that in fifth 2 CONC grade I had a teacher named Mr. Reese, the first male teacher I had ever 2 CONC had, and the first significant male in my life since my dad had died, and 2 CONC a man that I therefore was most eager to please. One night, in the 2 CONC dormitory, I did something particularly bad for which the punishment was 2 CONC a thing called grudging. When you were grudging, you stood with your 2 CONC nose and your toes against the wall in order to think about your 2 CONC behavior, and that night while the other kids slept I spent over an hour 2 CONC in the hall grudging. 2 CONT 2 CONT I remember praying. I remember telling God how sorry I was, and pleading 2 CONC for forgiveness. And I remember asking with childish earnestness, "And 2 CONC God, please, don't let Mr. Reese find out what I did." You know how you 2 CONC see things as a child. 2 CONT 2 CONT Wherever we went as a group, we marched two by two in a line - there were 2 CONC 30 of us in our dormitory section - and we marched in total silence. The 2 CONC next morning, all the sections were silently marching to breakfast, and 2 CONC as my section approached the elevator we were halted while they wheeled a 2 CONC gurney out in front of us. A sheet covered the body, but as they wheeled 2 CONC down the hall I knew in my heart that it was Mr. Reese. Later it was 2 CONC confirmed that he had died during the night, and I believed it was my 2 CONC fault. 2 CONT 2 CONT Up until then, I had gone to VBS at Montrose Bible Conference when I was 2 CONC home for the summers, and I can still remember Miss Jennings leading us 2 CONC in rousing renditions of Shadrach, Meschak and Abednigo. But, partly 2 CONC because of age, partly because of Mr. Reese, I stopped having much to do 2 CONC with God or church and it wasn't too much longer that I began to be 2 CONC involved with drugs and alcohol. I had my first cigarette when I was 2 CONC ten, was soon stealing them regularly, and began to drink and smoke pot 2 CONC by the time I was 12. I won't bore you with details, but my teenage 2 CONC years were fast, hard, and brutal. I've seen and done things no child 2 CONC should see or do. 2 CONT 2 CONT Once, in my late teens, when I was working at a gas station in 2 CONC Millersville after school, I picked up an evangelistic tract and read it. 2 CONC In it, it said Jesus knew that I just couldn't believe he was out there, 2 CONC but that if I would just ask him to show himself to me, he would. I 2 CONC remember crying and praying that, but then going out and getting stoned 2 CONC after work and never thinking about it again. At least, not until years 2 CONC later. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was 18 when I got married, and when my first son was born I was 21. My 2 CONC wife and I were ready to divorce within that first year after he was 2 CONC born. I was out drinking one night and when I called home to have my 2 CONC wife come pick me up she refused, so I began to walk home. I was so 2 CONC depressed, and felt like life was not worth living, that I hung over a 2 CONC bridge along route 30 and planned to drop myself on a passing motorists 2 CONC windshield. As I hung there, God said to me, "I am not done with you 2 CONC yet." Serious - I didn't know it was God, but I knew it wasn't my own 2 CONC thoughts, so I got up over the bridge and got home. 2 CONT 2 CONT That following Saturday morning, I had breakfast with a co-worker. He 2 CONC said he noticed I was kind of down, we talked a bit and I complained 2 CONC about life, and he asked me what I thought life ought to be like. I 2 CONC talked of love and peace and common decency, and he opened the scripture 2 CONC and began to explain how God wanted things to be. Three hours later, I 2 CONC knelt and gave my life to Jesus. 2 CONT 2 CONT My wife came home from work to find me playing a Jimmy Swaggert record 2 CONC that Mel had given me to listen to, and said, "After all those years of 2 CONC convincing me that God doesn't exist, now you want me to get all 2 CONC religious again?" She was not happy, but within a few weeks had 2 CONC recommitted her life to the Lord, as well. 2 CONT 2 CONT Living mostly in Lancaster County - we lived in Kansas for four years at 2 CONC one point - we raised four children: 2 CONT 2 CONT Ian, married to Jennifer Regan, has a son Abram 2 CONT Joshua, married to Jessica Haugaard 2 CONT Elias 2 CONT Dara 2 CONT 2 CONT In the first years afterward, I read the Bible front to back twice, and 2 CONC was part of a Prayer and Praise group that met every Sunday night for 4 2 CONC hours!! Those were wonderful times when we talked, philosophized, 2 CONC prayed, cried, wondered, and sang. I grew a lot. We did that for four 2 CONC or five years. 2 CONT We shopped for churches for a couple years until settling at Manor BIC, 2 CONC and then later became involved with a church planting that is now known 2 CONC as Millersville Brethren in Christ Church. 2 CONT 2 CONT Out of that prayer and praise group, a couple of young men banded 2 CONC together and we had Bible Study at my house for almost 20 years, every 2 CONC week. Over the years, almost 75 young men under the age of 30 came and 2 CONC studied with us, and I say every kind from the ones who went on to 2 CONC ministry to those who ended up in jail. 2 CONT 2 CONT I went back to college in the 80's and got my bachelor degree in Business 2 CONC Administration from Millersville University, and then went again in the 2 CONC 90's and received my MBA from Penn State. I have felt that my calling 2 CONC was to be in the work world, not in the professional ministry, but I have 2 CONC always felt called to minister. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1985 I began work with Turkey Hill Dairy. Shortly thereafter the 2 CONC company was sold to Kroger Company, and I have worked there since. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 31 JAN 2004 3 TIME 12:12:30 0 @I2@ INDI 1 NAME Robert Corson /Cox/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 SEP 1903 2 PLAC Scranton,PA 1 MARC 2 _ALT_BIRTH Y 2 DATE 9 MAY 1930 1 DEAT 2 DATE 22 AUG 1962 2 PLAC Washington,DC 1 BURI 2 PLAC Wellsboro,PA 1 FAMS @F1@ 1 FAMC @F3@ 1 DIV 2 DATE 1943 1 MARC 2 DATE 2 NOV 1944 2 PLAC Scranton,PA 1 NOTE I recieved these notes from Margie Bridges regarding Dad: 2 CONT 2 CONT "Robert Corson Cox II, b. 9/21/1903 at Scranton; d. 8/22/1962 at 2 CONC Georgetown, MD. Aunt Audrey says that Dad is the only man she knew who mowed the 2 CONC lawn in his white shirt and bowtie. He probably came home from work and 2 CONC didn't bother to change. He believed that people behaved like ladies and 2 CONC gentlemen if you treated them that way, including children. So, one 2 CONC morning when I was making scrambled eggs for myself, having just mastered 2 CONC this, he was delighted with what I was doing, and probably thinking it 2 CONC would encourage me, asked me if I would make some eggs for him, too. 2 CONC Much to my eternal shame, I said make your own. Those words echo forever 2 CONC in my mind. His response to them was as if he knew that I would need no 2 CONC chastising, because my words themselves would come back to haunt me. He 2 CONC just smiled and said OK. Then there is the story of how we were 2 CONC disciplined. The scene would be Elaine, Sharon and I jumping on the 2 CONC beds. We knew we could get away with it for awhile before the adults 2 CONC came up to stop us. Sure enough, after awhile, up would come Dad. He made 2 CONC a lot of noise coming up to give us warning. We would rush into the 2 CONC corner closet where two could hide in the corners and the third would be 2 CONC the one dragged out and spanked. Huh. spanked! Dad's method of spanking 2 CONC was to lift the legs daintily and gently pat the behind once. Sometimes 2 CONC I think we may have jumped on the bed just to get him to come up and play 2 CONC this out. Now, Mom was a spanker you wanted to avoid. We lived in dread 2 CONC of her whacks on the behind until we discovered in one of our readings an 2 CONC account of the book in the pants trick. I actually gave her a run for it 2 CONC most of the time. Around and around the dining room table and around the 2 CONC house until my nose would start to bleed from the excitement, and then 2 CONC the chase would stop and she would forget the punishment to take care of 2 CONC the blood. I remember distinctly one day I was standing on the arms of 2 CONC our "good" easy chair, and Dad came over and lifted me off and set me on 2 CONC the floor. I held my breath till I passed out. When I came to, Mom was 2 CONC telling Dad, "You know you can't do that with her." Seems like they 2 CONC must have been playing good guy bad guy with us, taking turns. I 2 CONC remember Dad coming home on my birthday, probably about 10 years old, and 2 CONC asking me to come and help him with something. I pouted and said why 2 CONC should I help it's my birthday. So he cajoled me into the front porch 2 CONC and there was a new Huffy bicycle he had just finished putting together. 2 CONC Dad loved Christmas. He had a tree in every bedroom as well as the 2 CONC living room and out on the 2nd floor porch. Plus lanterns up around the 2 CONC front. Then he videoed us opening our presents. It was as if we were 2 CONC playing out some kind of script. All very formal. Our names listed on a 2 CONC chalkboard in the movie, and each year or so another addition: John, 2 CONC Katy. Another memory is of Dad calling the editor of the local newspaper 2 CONC in the middle of his dinner hour after the office had closed to go down 2 CONC and get my papers for me because I had forgotten to do my afternoon 2 CONC route. Dad would drive me to the newspaper office and we would meet the 2 CONC editor in the gathering darkness to unlock the door. Not once did these 2 CONC gentlemen reprove me for my lateness. They chatted while I ran into the 2 CONC dark press room to get my papers and then locked up in the best of 2 CONC humors. This was repeated more than a few times. I remember once in the 2 CONC 6th grade Dad helping me with my word problems, which I found difficult. 2 CONC As he sat beside me, I was so overcome with the proximity, the pure fact 2 CONC that I had his complete attention, that I couldn't think at all, and 2 CONC after trying for awhile, he realized this, and let it go. Neither Mom 2 CONC nor Dad were much for touching, hugs, kisses, telling you they loved you. 2 CONC That was what the material things were supposed to show. That was how 2 CONC the 50's were: Give the kids all the stuff you never had growing up in 2 CONC the depression and they will be happier than you were. Still I do 2 CONC remember Dad and Mom for instance, coming into the water at the swimming 2 CONC pool and swirling us around. Copies have been made from that and distributed to all 2 CONC her children. The book was entitled, "My recollections of the War of the 2 CONC Rebellion". 2 CONT 2 CONT Robert was a major, 171st Regular Volunteer Infantry, November 16, 1862; 2 CONC was promoted to Colonel in the 207th, Regular Pennsylvania Volunteers, 2 CONC September 28, 1864; and to Brigadier General, April 9, 1865. The 2 CONC obituary of General Cox was printed in a Williamsport newspaper, as 2 CONC follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT "GENERAL ROBERT C. COX DIES AT WELLSBORO 2 CONT He was one of the most prominent men in northen Pennsylvania. 2 CONT 2 CONT General Robert C. Cox, one of the most prominent men in Northern 2 CONC Pennsylvania, died on Friday at his home in Wellsboro, aged 78 years. 2 CONC For many years General Cox at Grand Army reunions and other gatherings of 2 CONC veterans was a conspicuous figure, and was in great demand as a speaker. 2 CONC Mounted on his old war horse, he was marshal of every soldier's parade in 2 CONC Tioga County for many years, and he was held in the warmest regard by 2 CONC veterans and citizens alike. 2 CONT General Cox was born in Lycoming County, November 18, 1823. When 2 CONC the rebellion borke out he took an active part in enlisting troops. In 2 CONC 1862 he went to Harrisburg with men drafted from Tioga County. The One 2 CONC Hundred and Seventy-First Pennsylvania Volunteers was organized, and he 2 CONC was elected major. The regiment served a year and was mustered out. In 2 CONC 1864 the General was commisioned to raise a regiment, and the result of 2 CONC his efforts was the gallant 207th, of which he was commissioned colonel. 2 CONC In March, 1865, in front of Petersburg, the members of the regiment 2 CONC presented General Cox with a horse, "General Banks", and the trappings 2 CONC valued at $550. General Cox was brevetted brigadier general in 1865. 2 CONT In politics General Cox was a Whig, casting his first vote for Henry 2 CONC Clay. He was an ardent Republican from the organization of the party. 2 CONC He was elected treasurer of Tioga County in 1869 and served as 2 CONC prothonotary seven consecutive teerms from 1872, and declined re-election 2 CONC for another term. He was widely known throughout the state." 2 CONT 2 CONT HERE'S ANOTHER NEWSPAPER ACCOUNT FROM 1897, confirming some information 2 CONC and disagreeing with other: 2 CONT 2 CONT GEN. ROBERT CORSON COX is one of the oldest, most respected and best 2 CONC known citizens of Wellsboro. He is a native of Fairfield township, 2 CONC Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 18, 1833, a son 2 CONC of William and Hannah (Corson) Cox, the former a native of Montour 2 CONC county, of Irish ancestry, and the latter of Lycoming county, of 2 CONC German-Quaker stock. His parents removed to Delmar township, Tioga 2 CONC county, when Robert C. was about two months old, where they lived some 2 CONC twelve years and then returned to their former home in Lycoming county. 2 CONC In April, 1841, the family again came to this county and settled near the 2 CONC site of Liberty borough. Here the mother died in May, 1842, and the 2 CONC father in February, 1856. Robert c. was in his eighteenth year when his 2 CONC parents located in Liberty township, and had spent his boyhood assisting 2 CONC them on the farm, attending the common schools during the winter seasons 2 CONC and enduring the trials and hardships of those early days. On April 7, 2 CONC 1846, he married Lydia Ann Wheeland, a daughter of George and Mary K. 2 CONC Wheeland, of Liberty, whose ancestors were pioneers of Loyalsock 2 CONC township, Lycoming county, whence her parents removed to Liberty 2 CONC township, Tioga county, in 1827. Three children blessed this union, as 2 CONC follows: Henry C., cashier of the First National Bank of Wellsboro; Mary 2 CONC E., deceased wife of Jacob K. Richards, and Carrie M., deceased wife of 2 CONC Alfred P. Dartt. After his marriage Mr. Cox took charge of the homestead 2 CONC farm, on which his father had paid $500, but on account of a defective 2 CONC title our subject was compelled to repurchase the property. Here he 2 CONC lived, clearing the land and tilling the soil, until 1854, when he sold 2 CONC the farm and embarked in merchandising and lumbering at Liberty, which 2 CONC business he followed until entering the army in 1862. In the meantime he 2 CONC had served six years as orderly sergeant of a volunteer cavalry company, 2 CONC and was brigade inspector of militia, with the rank of major, from 1854 2 CONC up to the first year of the war. 2 CONT 2 CONT On the breaking out of the Rebellion he at once took an active and 2 CONC prominent part in raising troops to defend the flag, some of which were 2 CONC not accepted, Pennsylvania’s quota being full. But in August, 1862, he 2 CONC went to Harrisburg with the drafted men from Tioga county, and on the 2 CONC organization of the One Hundred and Seventy-first Pennsylvania Volunteers 2 CONC he was elected major of the regiment, his commission dating November 18, 2 CONC 1862. This regiment served about one year, principally on garrison duty 2 CONC in North Carolina, and was mustered out at Harrisburg in August, 1863. In 2 CONC the summer of 1864 General Cox was authorized by Adjutant General Russell 2 CONC to raise a regiment, and the result of his efforts in that direction was 2 CONC the gallant Two Hundred and Seventh Pennsylvania Volunteers, of which 2 CONC command he was commissioned colonel September 28, 1864. The regiment 2 CONC participated in the closing scenes of the war, including Hatcher’s Run, 2 CONC Fort Steadman, the assault on and capture of Petersburg, and the 2 CONC surrender of Lee at Appomattox. In March, 1865, while in front of 2 CONC Petersburg, the regiment presented General Cox with a horse and complete 2 CONC outfit, valued at $550, as a token of their appreciation of his soldierly 2 CONC qualities and the warm place he had in their affections. Its brave and 2 CONC efficient commander was brevetted brigadier general April 9, 1865, 2 CONC participated with his regiment in the grand review at Washington, D. C., 2 CONC was mustered out with his command at Alexandria, Virginia, may 31, 1865, 2 CONC and was discharged at Harrisburg on June 5 following. Returning to his 2 CONC home in Liberty, General Cox resumed the peaceful pursuits of 2 CONC merchandising and lumbering, and again became a plain American citizen. 2 CONT 2 CONT In politics, General Cox was originally a Whig, casting his first vote 2 CONC for Henry Clay for president, and has been a consistent Republican since 2 CONC the organization of that party. He served as justice of the peace in 2 CONC Liberty from 1862 to 1867, and was postmaster of the borough from April, 2 CONC 1869, until the autumn of the same year, when he was elected treasurer of 2 CONC Tioga county, which office he filled one term. While still treasurer he 2 CONC was elected prothonotary and clerk of the court, November 13, 1872, and 2 CONC was re-elected six successive terms, serving in that office a period of 2 CONC twenty-one consecutive years. He has been a permanent resident of 2 CONC Wellsboro since the fall of 1872, and is widely known in northern 2 CONC Pennsylvania. 2 CONT 2 CONT General Cox and wife have been members of the Methodist Episcopal church 2 CONC for nearly half a century, and have lived to celebrate the golden 2 CONC anniversary of their marriage. Few men are more favorably known in this 2 CONC section of the State than this old veteran, whose unsullied integrity and 2 CONC clean military and official record have endeared him to the people of 2 CONC Tioga county. at his last election as prothonotary he received 9,302 2 CONC votes, or fifty-eight more than the combined vote cast for Pattison and 2 CONC Delamater, and during the closing year of that term he was frequently 2 CONC urged by many leading men in different parts of the county to again be a 2 CONC candidate for the office which he had filled so long and faithfully, but 2 CONC he firmly declined, and retired to private life. Here in the happy 2 CONC companionship of his affectionate wife, his faithful helpmate through 2 CONC both sunshine and shadow, he is spending the sunset of a successful and 2 CONC honorable career in the enjoyment of the esteem and confidence of the 2 CONC entire community. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 21 SEP 2004 3 TIME 13:55:01 0 @I38@ INDI 1 NAME William /Cox/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE Abt 1800 2 PLAC Lycoming County,PA (?) 1 MARC 2 _ALT_BIRTH Y 2 DATE Abt 1818 1 DEAT 2 DATE FEB 1856 2 PLAC Liberty,PA 1 FAMS @F13@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 21 SEP 2004 3 TIME 13:51:30 0 @I39@ INDI 1 NAME Hannah /Corson/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE Abt 1803 2 PLAC Montour County,PA 1 MARC 2 _ALT_BIRTH Y 2 DATE Abt 1818 1 DEAT 2 DATE MAY 1842 2 PLAC LYcoming County,PA 1 FAMS @F13@ 1 NOTE The Latter Day Saints show Hannah dying in Illinois.
